Insights Into The Success
Of My Initial Hospital Stay
PREVIEW
There was no preparation for my unexpected admission to Kaiser Hospital immediately following my Stroke. I laid there, a take-charge guy, totally dependent on other, completely surrounded by unfamiliar procedures and protocols. But, I did have an innate sense that if I didn't pay attention and form my own response to this situation, I was not going to make the most of this new experience, and what the hospital staff was calling RECOVERY !

Joining The Team
After the first morning, I observed that because I had refused a Covid Test, hospital staff had to be "suited up" for something as simple as refilling my water carafe. It was obvious my stubbornness was getting in the way of their trying to efficiently deliver my medical care. I wasn't being a "team player" and that was affecting my relationships with people I now had to count on for in the treatment of my Stroke.

My Team Responsibilities
At the end of the first day, I had observed enough of the team play to ensure that certain behaviors on my part that would demonstrate my determination to be a "Team Player", including
Be Rested and Ready
Greet Each Staff Member
Show Interest
Ask Questions
Be Alert To Fall Risks
Keep Myself Hydrated
Show Respect For Team Members
Be Receptive and Responsible
Show A Willingness To Do The Work
Show My Potential
Being a Team Player would prove most valuable throughout my hospitalization, and into my out-patient care and at-home recovery. The members of my hospital care team shared one salient belief . . . Patient Cooperation Was Their Prize !
